BIGGEST BREASTFEEDING BARRIERS

Despite the public consensus on the benefits of breastfeeding, not every nursing mama keeps the milk party going beyond the hospital. From unnecessary birth interventions keeping you from nursing your baby to lack of support adding to the many breastfeeding challenges, discover the top five reasons women do not nurse their babies.

Breastfeeding rates continue to climb with nearly 77 percent of new moms initiating breastfeeding. However, it is the roadblocks within the first 24 hours of your newborn’s life that pose the biggest hurdles. Here are the top five breastfeeding challenges Lamaze International cites when it comes to whether or not you’ll be nursing your baby:

Unnecessary birth interventions

While you cannot control whether or not your bundle of joy is delivered by cesarean section, birth interventions such as C-sections, being confined to your bed or artificially starting or expediting labor can actually delay when your milk comes in. When the decision is in your hands, opt to let Mother Nature take its course and you may increase your chances of successfully nursing your baby.

Interruptions during the golden hour

The precious first hour after your baby makes her grand entrance into the world is not only a vital part of forming a bond with your newborn, but also helps foster successful breastfeeding for the months thereafter. When your youngster is whisked off to the nursery for testing immediately postpartum, you and your baby may not enjoy the full benefits of breastfeeding. Evidence shows that skin-to-skin time between you and your little one for the first hour, or until after the first feeding, increases mommy-confidence, reduces stress and therefore makes breastfeeding easier. Research has also found that babies nurse sooner, longer and more easily, leading to less crying.

Nipple confusion

It may seem like popping a cork into your newborn is the right thing to do if it makes a crying baby happy, but when you introduce pacifiers or artificial nipples before breastfeeding is well established, you may face breastfeeding challenges. Unless medically unavoidable, don’t use the pacifier until after about four weeks when you and your newborn get the hang of nursing.

Supplementing with formula

Lamaze International emphasizes that breast milk is best for babies, and supplementing with formula when not medically necessary could prevent your milk from coming in. Even during the first few days postpartum, your body produces immunity-building colostrum, which is one of the biggest benefits of breastfeeding, even in these small amounts.

Lack of postpartum support

Whether you’re new at the mommy thing or have other offspring to care for, without the right breastfeeding support once you’ve left the hospital you may find yourself succumbing to breastfeeding challenges. Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family to pitch in with housework, dinner and baby care, or seek support in the form of lactation consultants, local community breastfeeding resources, breastfeeding support groups or even telephone contact with your postpartum nurse to increase your chances of successfully nursing your baby.

MILK YOUR PREGNANCY FOR ALL IT’S WORTH

While pregnancy can have it’s side effects, it also has some major pluses!

10. You have a free pass

If you don’t feel like going to the gym one or two days or really want to have a second scoop of ice cream. Just. This. Once. You can! Pregnancy is a time to focus on you and your body, and while your pregnancy and delivery will likely go much more smoothly if you maintain your doctor-approved exercise routine and healthy eating, skipping the gym or having a bite or two more dessert than you had planned on isn’t going to hurt. Enjoy!

9. You are the center of attention

People – even strangers – love to see a pregnant woman. Expect people to give up their seat for you, open the door for you and generally fawn over you asking about your baby and your pregnancy. Just make sure they know not to touch the belly.

8. Your man will fall even more in love with you

One of the most amazing parts of pregnancy is that you and your husband are not just a couple anymore – you are a family and preparing to welcome your newest member together. Its exciting time for both of you and your man is probably in awe of your amazing ability to grow a little human inside of you. You rock, mama. So revel in it.

7. Foot rubs and shoulder massages

Thanks to your pregnant state, your man is probably going to dote on you more than ever. Get ready for great feet rubs and shoulder massages or a late night drive-thru run from your man to satisfy your current craving. Bonus!

6. Your hair will be full and fabulous

Your hair may seem fuller and thicker during pregnancy. This is a result of a change in hormones causing your hair to fall out at a slower rate. Work that big, sexy hair!

5. Your nails will grow longer and stronger

Once again, thanks to pregnancy hormones, your nails will grow long and strong so pamper your pregnant self with a nice manicure to show off those digits.

4. You’ll have that glow

You’ve heard of the pregnancy glow, right? Well, you’ve got it. Flaunt it. ‘Nuff said.

3. Your skin will look great

Many women experience thirst during pregnancy and quench it with lots of water. Smart move. All that water can help revitalize your skin.

2. You can pretty much get your way in an argument

We’re not suggesting you pull the pregnant card all the time. But, it’s pretty much a given that if you and your man have a tiff while your pregnant, you can pour on the sympathy and he’ll start gushing over you all over again. Use this tactic with caution, ladies.

1. You have a little you growing inside you

Of course the number one best part of being pregnant is that you are making a child. Your child. Talk to it. Nourish it. Bond with baby, even before it’s born. This is an amazing time in your life so be grateful and enjoy each moment of your pregnancy.

We Enjoy all of our clients stories but this one in particular is blog worthy. Take a moment to read Mrs. M’s story about her children meeting for the first time. If you had a story that you would like to share, email our Pink team!

Mrs. M Wrote,

When I gave birth to Selena, the moment I was looking forward to most, was introducing her to our first daughter. I couldn’t wait to show Mia that the “baby who lived in my belly button for nine months was a living breathing little girl we got to take home.

The moment was so special that I relinquished my job as family photographer and trusted everyone else in the room to capture it for me. I even made sure someone videotaped, but thanks to an excellent view of my underwear throughout the entire thing, I cannot share it with you.

What’s so bad about a hospital gown upshot, you wonder? Perhaps you don’t remember that after giving birth, you are given boy shorts made of gauze and told to stuff them with puppy pee pads.

But I digress…

Mia walked in wide-eyed with both hands pressed against her cheeks like Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone. Then she ran excitedly over to my bedside, stopping short just before she reached the baby.

“Who is that?” I asked.

“IT’S MOMMY!” she shouted.

“No, who’s THAT?” we asked again and pointed to the baby.

“It’s Selena,” she said a little unsure of herself.

“Who’s Selena?” I prompted her.

“My big sister.”

“No, YOU’RE the big sister!” we all laughed. “Do you want to give her a kiss?”

Mia obliged, the room let out a collective “Awwwww…” and my heart swelled ten times the size of Texas.

We asked Mia if she wanted to hold Selena and then sat them together in a chair, Grammy spotting Selena the whole time, just in case.

There is seriously nothing better than watching your normally wild soon-to-be three-year-old try to be as gentle as possible with your newborn. Mia cradled Selena on her lap as she pet her shoulder protectively and looked at her with both love and awe.

THIS, I thought, is what parenting is all about.

Then Mia told me she brought the baby a lollipop. I told her that Selena was too little to eat a lollipop and she said, “But I’m not too little to eat a lollipop!” And that’s how Mia snookered us into letting her eat candy at the hospital. The girl is GOOD.

Now. Most people share the one perfect photo that captures the pure joy a child feels when meeting their baby sibling for the first time.

I will not be that selective.

After going through the numerous pictures taken by Mike, Grammy, my sister, etc. it is clear that Mia didn’t just go through one emotion that day. She went through many.

Top 10 Holiday Gifts for Mommy’s to be

You’re pregnant, and while everyone else is enjoying the holiday festivities, you’re skipping the cocktails, eyeing the cheese platter with suspicion and worrying about salmonella in your eggnog. So we think it fine to ask for some extravagant gifts this year. Add these to your wish list.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage can relieve back pain and improve sleep and mood, as well as decrease stress and reduce labor complications. Prenatal massage is best given while you lie on your side propped up by pillows. Neck and shoulder massage is a safe sitting-up option, as well.

Foot Massage

There is no better way to treat a pregnant woman than to give their sore swollen feet a wonderful foot massage. It also elevates stress on a woman’s body and helps with blood flow.

Nook Body Pillow

As the bump gets bigger, a good night’s sleep gets more and more elusive. A great body pillow can make all the difference. I love this one from Nook because it’s filled with comfy memory foam and protected by Nook’s patented Pebble cover, which is stain resistant and machine-washable.

Chewbeads Perry Necklace

The concept behind Chewbeads is pretty brilliant – babies love to teethe on jewelry, so why not make jewelry that’s designed for teething? Best of all, Chewbeads are so cute you’d wear them even when the baby isn’t around.

Nested Bean Zen Swaddle Blanket

You might think this is a gift for the baby, but you’d be wrong. The new Zen Swaddle is weighted to simulate a parent’s touch and create the sensation of being held, even when the baby is sleeping in a crib or bassinet. This is the gift of a good night’s sleep – priceless for any new mom.

Skip Hop Grand Central Diaper Bag

This is the newest bag from the design geniuses at Skip Hop and it carries a TON of stuff. It’s cute enough to use as an everyday bag, to tote around a laptop and some files. Or you can use it as it was intended, and stuff it with everything you need for a day out with the baby. Like all Skip Hop bags, it can attach to the handles of your stroller.

Sahara Bugaboo Cameleon

This special edition Bugaboo Cameleon stroller has been decked out with gorgeous, luxe fabrics and comes with a beautiful, gray wool blanket that will keep your baby cozy. This is something you’ll enjoy using every day after the baby arrives.

Maamam Towel

When there’s a baby in the bath, all that splishing and splashing often adds up to one soaking wet mama. This towel is especially nice because it doubles as an apron, and will keep you dry and keep the towel close at hand.

7am Stroller Handmuffs

On cold windy days, even nice, thick gloves aren’t enough to keep the chill from permeating, especially when your fingers are wrapped around the handle of a stroller. This set of handmuffs will keep your hands warm and toasty.

Ergo Baby Carrier

This is the gift of free hands. Wearing your baby helps with bonding and makes it easier to navigate simple tasks that require two hands. The Ergo Baby Carrier offers several carry positions and comes in lots of different colors and patterns.

Best Christmas and Holiday Books for Kids

10 children’s holiday books, from timeless reads to newer classics.

The Elf on the Shelf

How exactly does Santa keep tabs on who’s naughty and who’s nice? Turns out he’s got a mole–the elf on the shelf–who comes packaged with a companion book. The elf mysteriously changes locations overnight, and kids love looking for him as soon as they wake up in the morning. Bonus for parents: Since the elf’s always watching, you should be able to milk major good behavior out of your kids.

The Night Before Christmas

We all know the magical, evocative words of Clement C. Moore’s traditional holiday poem. This gorgeously illustrated version, which uses collage papers and oil paints, adds a modern twist: Santa wears funky pants, sports dreadlocks and leaves the children traditional African gifts.

Fancy Nancy: Splendiferous Christmas

Nancy’s psyched about the holidays until her ultra-fancy tree topper breaks. Can the ultimate girly-girl learn to love plain old DIY tree decorations? As always, the detailed, sparkly illustrations make this a fave among the princess set.

The Berenstein Bears and the Joy of Giving

Does your kid have a case of the holiday gimmes? Brother and Sister Bear do too, until they learn what Christmas is really all about. This holiday-themed book in the series begun in 1962 ends with everyone learning a very important lesson, just like always.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Remember this one from when you were a kid? Older children will love this 1972 classic, in which the six misbehaving Herdman kids — the “worst kids in the entire history of the world” — take over the church pageant and reinterpret the story of Christmas. The mix of outrageous moments, hilarious hijinks and profound surprises makes this one read parents will love as much as kids.

Dream Snow

Lovers of Eric Carle’s classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar will recognize the same iconic collage illustrations in this wintry tale about a farmer who dreams about a white Christmas. Like Caterpillar, the pages hold extra interest for young readers, with cutouts and counting.

Li’l Rabbit’s Kwanzaa

Brer Rabbit meets African tradition in this tale of a rabbit looking for something special to give his sick grandmother for Karamu, the Kwanzaa feast.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

What would Christmas be without the Grinch? Kids love the dastardly character, who plots to cancel the holiday, only to find it happens anyway, even without the presents. Grinch-loving kiddos will go for the animated and live-action movie versions too.

Olivia Helps With Christmas

The plucky piglet gets her house ready for Christmas, “helping” her parents in the most unhelpful ways possible. The charming black and white illustrations–punctuated with green and red accents for the holidays — play off the spare words to tell the whole story.

Happy Hanukkah, Corduroy

The sweet stuffed bear in overalls offers toddlers an introduction to the traditions of Hanukkah, from lighting the menorah and hunting for gelt to playing dreidel.

It can be heartbreaking when your baby is feeling ill and you struggle to comfort her.

I speak with experience as my three month old suffered with a cold for two weeks earlier this month. When they’re very small it feels as though there is little you can do and, of course, they can’t tell you how they’re feeling. But there are some ways you can help. Below are some things you can do to provide relief to babies when they’re going through a cold.
Room Vaporiser
A vaporiser in the room where your baby sleeps can really help clear her airways so breathing is easier. Check the pack as some are age restricted. For example, I used a Boots electronic vaporiser as it was suitable from three months. Alternatively you can buy vaporiser liquid that you can drop into warm water or onto a cloth that you drape over a radiator.
Clear Baby’s Nose
Saline drops can be used to help soften any blockages in baby’s nose and you can also use a nasal aspirator. It’s important to keep baby’s nose as clear as possible as it can affect her eating if it’s blocked.
Feeding
When baby’s nose is blocked she may struggle to feed, getting frustrated or even crying at the breast or bottle. This is because babies breathe through their noses while they eat. If this happens the best thing to do is try to clear her nose, soothe her with cuddles and feed her when she’s a little calmer. You may find she prefers to feed little and often at this time, so just follow your baby’s cues. Another tip is to keep your baby as upright as possible during feeds as this can help her airways stay clearer. If you’re breastfeeding, your milk is really important while your baby is sick because it contains a wealth of antibodies that will help her fight off the infection so feed as much as you can. If you’re the one who’s sick and your baby’s fine you should still nurse your baby as often as possible to pass antibodies onto her, but of course ensure you wash your hands and catch coughs and sneezes in a tissue.
Sleeping
Your baby may be more tired than normal with a cold, and this is no reason to be concerned. Let her sleep if she needs to, and just try to feed her when you can. Just like us, babies often need to rest more to help them recover from an illness.
Fever
Check your baby’s temperature and, if it’s raised, you can give your baby a paracetamol medicine such as Calpol, as long as she is old enough to take it. If your baby is too young to take medicine and has a fever, or the fever worsens, contact your doctor.
Remember
It’s best if you can try and stay as calm as possible as babies pick up on how we’re feeling and if you’re calm it will help your baby to relax more. If you’re concerned, or the cold doesn’t seem to be getting better, it’s a good idea to see a doctor who can check your baby’s ears, listen to her breathing, check for dehydration and reassure you if you’re worried. It’s best not to take your baby to places where she could pass the cold onto anyone else while she’s showing signs of illness, and it’s best not to overstimulate her as this can stop her resting well, so just take it easy, give your baby plenty of cuddles.

THE RIGHT KIND OF WATER TO USE IN YOUR BABY’S FORMULA

You’ve decided to feed your baby formula. The powdered and liquid concentrate formulas are a terrific alternative to the ready-to-use options – they’re convenient and less expensive. The question now is this: What kind of water should you use in your baby’s formula?

Types of water

Did you ever think you’d have so many options for water? There’s tap water, purified water, demineralized water, deionized water, spring water, vitamin water, sparkling water, distilled water and more.

Now baby is here and we have to really think about what’s in our water so we can mix it with her formula. The first thing you should do is talk to your baby’s pediatrician. He or she can recommend the best type (and the right amount) to mix with formula.

Bottled water just for babies?

Some bottled waters are made specifically for use in preparing baby formula. If the label on the water bottle indicates that it’s made for babies, then the water has been bottled under strict standards established by the EPA.

Types of water to avoid

Refrain from giving your baby bottled mineral water, which contains sodium. Carbonated water is also a no-no. Both mineral and carbonated water will be hard on your baby’s digestive system and cause discomfort. Stick with the most basic water you can find.

The pros and cons of fluoride

Many water sources contain fluoride, which is important for strengthening your baby’s teeth and preventing tooth decay. There’s a problem, however, if your baby gets too much fluoride. Overexposure to fluoride can cause enamel fluorosis — those telltale white spots on baby’s temporary and permanent teeth. (Your baby can be overexposed even while her teeth are still forming in the gums.) If your baby is taking a fluoride supplement — usually beginning at around six months — make sure you use only non-fluoridated bottled water with her formula.

Tip: Bottled water labels that read “purified,” “distilled,” “demineralized” or “deionized” typically contain lower amounts of fluoride, but keep in mind that bottled water companies are not required to list fluoride levels on labels.

What about tap water?

Tap water varies significantly from one municipality to another. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends checking with your local water utility to see what’s in your water supply. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) encourages parents to boil tap water for one minute to sterilize it before adding to formula.

Tip: Tap water is considered safe and is a low-cost alternative to bottled waters. Consider installing a reverse osmosis water filter on your faucet to remove impurities and fluoride.

Drinking water

For the first six months of her life, your baby needs only the water contained in breast milk or mixed with formula. Her kidneys are still learning how to work, and too much water can wreak havoc on them an cause water intoxication. After your child turns six months old, check with her pediatrician about offering her small amounts of water to drink.

TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR BREASTFED BABY TO TAKE A BOTTLE, WHETHER MOM IS NEEDED A NIGHT OUT OR IS GOING BACK TO WORK.

You’ve had a baby and you’re breastfeeding successfully. However you may be going back to work, taking a trip or you just need a break or a night out and are ready to teach your breastfed baby to take a bottle. You may also want to quit nursing in the daytime, but continue to nurse your child before bed. Each baby is different and this process will require some planning and patience on your part, but following our tips will help take the stress out introducing a bottle to your breastfed baby.

Make sure you wait to give your baby a bottle until your milk supply is well established and baby is latching on and nursing well, especially if you plan on continuing to breastfeed. Every little bit of breastmilk benefits your baby, so even if you plan on letting dad or the babysitter give your baby a bottle, try to also breastfeed as long as possible or pump your breastmilk to be fed to baby in a bottle.Having said that, here are some tips to help your breastfed baby learn to take a bottle so mom can get a little break!Introducing a bottle
The best way to make this transition is to introduce a bottle containing the breast milk that your baby is accustomed to. To fill a bottle, you will need to express your milk and a breast pump is a very handy device to have for that. It serves a number of purposes. It relieves engorgement, you can have extra breast milk on hand to freeze and thaw later and if you need to increase your breast-milk supply, this will do the trick.

Breast pumps
If possible, using your own breastmilk in a bottle is best for baby — and a breast pump is a neccessity. There are few different kinds on the market.

The electric is the most expensive and fastest, I highly recommend electric if it is affordable.

Battery operated breast pumps are less expensive than electric models, but you will need to replace your batteries regularly so allow for that when you are costing out.

Manual breast pumps are the least expensive, but take longer to pump. There are two basic types. The syringe pump and the trigger-operated. Both are simple to use and easy to clean. Syringe pumps allow for controlled pressure while many trigger pumps allow for one-handed pumping.

Any type of pump will come with complete instructions for use. Many of these pumps can be rented from a pharmacy, hospital, or your local La Leche group. Of course there is always the old standby – - borrow from a friend.

Baby formula
If you plan on stopping breastfeeding and start formula feeding, start by mixing the bottle with half breastmilk and half formula to help baby get used to the taste.

Formula can be purchased in liquid or powder form. The latter is handy as you can make up a small amount without opening a can and wasting formula you won’t use. Just follow the directions on the container.
Be confident that commercially prepared formula will meet your baby’s nutritional needs.

Infant formula takes longer to digest than breast milk so three things will change once you have made the switch.

• Formula fed babies usually go longer between feedings.
• Bottle-fed babies may sleep longer at night, though breast-fed babies catch up at about 3 to 5 months.
• Your baby’s poop will change color when you switch to baby formula — less odorous to darker, smellier stools instead of loose, yellow stools.

Aimee St. Thomas is a working mother of two girls. When she had her first girl eight years ago, she says that when she made the switch from breast feeding to bottle feeding it was relatively easy. She says, ‘Since Meghan was colicky, she seemed more satisfied with formula and I really enjoyed the break when others could take over a feeding.’

Baby bottles
If your baby won’t take one bottle, try a different brand or a different nipple. Try a nipple with a slower or faster flow. Or change baby formulas. If your baby is not cooperating with the bottle and you are worried, don’t. Once he or she is hungry, the new nipple and bottle will be attractive to them.

Bottle feeding still provides lots of cuddle time and don’t forget to get daddy involved. They need bonding time too.

What about nipple confusion?
What should you do if your baby no longer wants to breastfeed after being fed by bottle? Drinking from a bottle uses different muscles than breastfeeding, and babies might get used to how fast milk comes out of the bottle and will then have a hard time going back to breastfeeding. If this happens and you want to continue breastfeeding, hold off on bottle feeding until baby is a little older (at least 4 weeks old) and try again.

Total Summer Pregnancy Guide Tips 10-17

10. Cue Up the Cravings

Go ahead and dig into the occasional gooey, greasy cheeseburger at your friend’s summer BBQ, that fully loaded ice cream sundae, or a fruity virgin cocktail at the beach. After all, you do need a few hundred extra calories each day, and these treats are among the great summer joys — somehow, they just taste better this time of year. And it’s not like anyone expects your belly to look flat in that new maternity bikini you just splurged on. So order up and enjoy!

11. Beat the Bloat

Edema — fluid retention that causes swelling, particularly in your hands, feet, and ankles — can get worse in these scorching months. There’s usually nothing dangerous about it, but it can make you feel a little – ugh – uncomfortably blimpish. To combat it, avoid excess sodium (ditch the salt shaker and processed, packaged foods, which are often high in sodium), stay cool, and drink plenty of fluids. As counterintuitive as it sounds, sipping water actually helps your body rid itself of excess fluid it’s hanging on to. Oh, and prop your feet up as much as possible; elevating them can also lessen swelling.

12. Summer-Proof Your Office Space

Whether you’re trying to work ahead before maternity leave or are secretly registering for your layette online, chances are you’re still clocking some decent hours at work this summer. Make your office more bearable by stocking your desk with heat-beating essentials like a fan, extra water bottles, and comfy shoes for lunchtime strolls. And for those really sticky, sweaty days, it can’t hurt to stow an extra maternity tee or tank.

13. Clear Off Your Social Calendar

Long car trips + pregnant belly= unhappy, uncomfortable mama-to-be. This summer, you may want to scale back on your usually frenetic travel schedule (babymoon aside, natch) in favor of activities closer to home. Know that it’s perfectly okay to turn down plans every now and then, so don’t be afraid to take a rain check on a last-minute invite to a pal’s beach house (since it really means seven sweltering hours stuck in the car) or that second cousin’s wedding two states away. Cramped car rides are even less fun these days than usual — and everyone will understand.

14. Stay Cool

Pregnancy literally does make you one hot mama. Not only is your own metabolic furnace throwing off heat, so is your baby’s. In the winter it was probably no biggie, but by now you may find yourself camped in front of the AC and still boiling. And it’s more than just a comfort thing — the scorching weather combined with your hotter-than-usual body temp makes you more prone to overheating. Be sure to sip that water and dress in lightweight, breathable fabrics. On days when the heat index (which tells you how hot it actually feels outside by factoring in both temperature and humidity) rises above 90, try to spend as much time as possible inside in a nice, cool space. Note: If your heart starts pounding, you feel dizzy, or you stop sweating, you may have heat exhaustion. Rest right away and get something cool to drink. If symptoms don’t subside, call your doctor.

15. Practice Picnic Safety

Summer is all about backyard BBQs, spreading out a blanket and busting open the picnic basket. By all means, eat alfresco whenever you like, just be smart about it. When you fire up the grill, make sure meats are fully cooked to prevent unwittingly noshing harmful bacteria, like salmonella. You might want to invest in a meat thermometer to totally eliminate the “is it done?” guesswork. Steer clear of perishable foods that have been sitting out for a while. “You probably already know to watch out for things like mayonnaise, but really, anything you’d normally store in the fridge — cheese, milk, fresh-squeezed juice, even a well-done hamburger — is worth avoiding if it’s been warming in the sun for a few hours.

16. Enjoy the Lazy, Baby-Free Days

Make it your mission to lounge as much as possible now — and allow plenty of totally guilt-free you-time. We’re not saying you’ll never get to read trashy magazines at the beach, treat yourself to weekly pedicures, or have a standing date night with hubs after the bundle arrives, but the opportunities will be fewer, at least for a while. So live it up!
